There is so much information available for public consumption that it baffles me that job seekers do not spend more than five minutes to learn about their job targets, job classifications of interest, competitive companies, salary ranges and names of hiring managers.

A job search takes time and effort. You need to make the effort and do some "homework". If you do not do the homework, it will show up either in the interview process or the salary negotiation phase, should you get that far. So, do yourself and your family a favor - do some research before the interview.

Finding Keywords for your Resume

Everybody is talking about making certain that keywords are added to every resume. You need to have keywords in the resume (not as much for software programs but for a human being to identify - more on this element in a future posting). But the question many job seekers have is:

"Where do I find these key words?"

Simple stated, search online job boards for positions that you have held or are interested in. Evaluate the postings and jot down the words. After reviewing the ~ 10 descriptions, you should have a pretty good idea of the primary and secondary keywords. After you have search the job boards, "google" the following "name of title" job description. The results will lead you to job descriptions (not necessarily postings) to positions that interest you.

This exercise will provide you will all the keywords you will need for your resume / LinkedIn profile.

For 40+ Jobseekers

There are very few circumstances where the responsibilities that you held back in the 90's are applicable to your direction today. Keep the sections lined up and consistent.
Use an Arial or Times New Roman font (or similar).
Font size shouldn't be smaller than 10pt or larger than 12pt, except for your Name and Headings.
Do not include pronouns such as "I," company street addresses, salary, or reasons for leaving.
Two-page resume: be sure to fill the second page at least halfway down the page.
Place “Continued” at the bottom of page one, and your name and “Page 2” at the top of page two.
Do not graphics sparingly unless you are in a creative field. It is safe to use a border and shading.

I write thank you notes on a regular basis. Here are a couple of fundamentals that you need to abide by:

Keep it short (2 paragraphs tops)
Mention 1 - 2 key points of the meeting that will resonate with the hiring manager
Thank he / she for their time
Indicate your level of interest (remember - "No" is not a bad word. Therefore, if you are not interested, then let the hiring manager know. You will be respected for being honest and forthright - can pay dividends down the road.

To prepare for an interview, find out as much as you can beforehand. Call the person who scheduled your interview and ask:

Who will you be talking to? Will you meet the manager you'd work for, or will you just talk to HR?
What's the dress code? Dress better than suggested. Most times, it's best to wear a professional suit. .
Get directions to the office. Plan to leave early. Keep a phone number to call if you get stuck on the bus or in traffic. If you arrive late and stressed, the interview will not go well.

If a picture is deemed a qualification for employment (i.e. models), then a picture should have relevance in a search. Otherwise, the requirement of a picture can be defined as a violation of employment law. If the search algorithm incorporates a picture into relevance factors, LinkedIn may be in violation of federal and state employment laws and not realize it.

Credit Reports

Interesting perspective on why employers run credit reports.

"Perhaps someone claims they made a good six-figure income for the last 10 years, yet they show repeated credit problems during that period. Are they lying about their income? Are they poor money managers? Do they have a major financial issue that\'s draining their resources? Any of these might (or might not) have a negative effect on their job."

The Fair Credit Reporting Act governs almost all issues related to the use of credit reports. Job applicants have the right to a copy of their credit report, and the law requires the hiring entity to provide a copy to the job applicant. In addition, if an employer decides not to hire a candidate based on the results of a credit report, the candidate must be told the reason why and be provided with the credit report information.

What's more, younger workers are often perceived as job hoppers -- quick to jump from one opportunity to the next. Employers aren't likely to want to invest in training new talent -- especially in this environment -- unless employees are committed and stable.

For the life of me, why do so many people think that they must produce resumes that are only one (1) page in length. The argument for one page resumes held more water years ago but ever since Black Friday (Oct. '87), the work force has changed and people do not stay with one company for their entire careers. Fact is, people change jobs constantly, especially with tech-related start-ups.

My rule of thumb - if you are compromising the integrity of the content and omitting vital information with your efforts to craft a one (1) page resume, STOP!. It is perfectly OK to submit a two (2) page resume that has all the important achievements and responsibilities that you have earned / held.

After speaking with him, we identified the main problem as an issue with a temperamental, micro-manager of a boss. Point is - be objective and identify WHY you are looking for a change. Open Networking - Not an Advocate

I think that all of us realize just how powerful a tool LinkedIn can be for business networking. When LinkedIn first became prominent in 2005/2006, many of us called it a “ramped-up job site” or “social networking”. In actuality, it is neither. LinkedIn is “business networking” and can be used for many purposes (i.e. qualifying sales / business development leads, identifying new vendors / suppliers / service providers / IT freelancers) over and above being the preeminent job search tool for both white and blue collar professionals (LinkedIn’s constituency of skilled tradesmen is growing rapidly). In my opinion, LinkedIn far outshines CareerBuilder, Monster, Dice, etc. to the point that these web properties will cease to exist in their current state within 12 months.

I am a firm believer in the axiom “Whoever has the most toys does not win”. I believe that the quest for the most “friends” on Facebook or most “connections” on LinkedIn is a silly game and a waste of energy. When your sole goal is to accumulate as many names as possible, your “network” loses value and focus. Therefore, with the importance of LinkedIn growing every day, make it a point to find ways to add value to your network by:

1. Joining LinkedIn groups pertinent to your job or industry

2. Answering your LinkedIn email

3. Offer assistance to reasonable and responsible inquiries

4. Become an “influencer” by posting interesting statistics, articles and job leads in your profile.

Exit Interviews

Exit Interviews are standard procedure with many companies. While your participation is not mandatory, please keep these notes in mind:

As a departing employee, will you benefit from an exit interview?
Is the exit interview anonymous or must you sign a questionnaire or the HR rep's notes?
Is the reason you're leaving any of the company's business or an invasion of your privacy?
Why did your employer wait until you're leaving to ask your opinion?
Will the HR department really use your comments for improvements or are they just trying to find out the "real" reason you're leaving?
Might an exit interview burn a bridge, ruin a reference or cause an adverse background check for you?
Might you sue your former employer down the road?

When I write resumes for students / new graduates, the EDUCATION section is always at the top of the resume because at this stage of your career development, this is the most important attribute for a new grad / student to promote. This is the most common and most acceptable resume format. It is the only format I recommend to my clients.

Here is my take on having your address on your resume:

1. When you are sending your resume directly to the hiring manager, include your address. As a hiring manager, I do not want to waste my time addressing resumes send by people who live far away from the office. I want to know where you live and I believe most hiring managers will agree. I highly doubt it is a security risk sending your resume directly to a hiring manager for a company, no matter the size

2. When you are posting your resume on the Internet, include only an email address. In this case, your address becomes "public domain" and it is wise to hold back this information.

Attention to Detail - Cover Letter

I write cover letters for clients all the time and tell them that they will have to chance 1 - 2 lines specifically for the job they are applying. You want a job? Start networking--yesterday. It is no more or less simple that that. And guess what? Whether you know it or not, you already have a network to use.

Another fact...networking is fun. Even for Introverts like me. You just need to approach it with the right attitude.

I agree 100%. Networking should feel like a conversation. It is a time to find common ground with another human being in this world.

In Chapter Six of that book, Devora she spells out almost everything you need to know about preparing for the nightmare of networking at a conference and coming out on top. (In addition, I would suggest presenting at the conference yourself. It gives you a reason to go and then you can't "get out of it.") Extroverts tend to like to go to conferences just to go. Although they could benefit from reading this chapter in order to best prepare for a conference.

If you are not going to conferences and need to network now...then follow my tips...and you know I'll have more. I love to tell people what to do.

1. Informational Interviews are the major way you network. You find someone you want to work for, work with or works in the field you want to know more about and interview them. This may be a short interview, it may be a lunch, it may be a guided tour of the company or the organization. This is great for Introverts because they can prepare ahead of time. How do you find someone? Check with your network to find someone, see point 2. 2. People need to remember that networking contacts are not unreal people in conferences. They are human beings with human feelings. This need not be hard because it is about building new relationships and making friends and connecting and reconnecting. Now Introverts do find that overwhelming sometimes. So your current network can be your best ally in introducing you to new people so you don't have to do it yourself. These are: Everyone in your family (even aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins), high school teachers, college professors, any co-worker you have ever had, any manager (even when you worked at hardees), everyone on linked-in, your priest or rabbi or other religious figure--if that's your thing, any people have met at those dreaded conferences (obviously be careful about current supervisors or co-workers who blab). As I like to say, you never know who knows someone you want to know. My brother knows Bon Jovi, Newt Gingrich, and Aretha Franklin. Not that it matters, but that is kinda cool. I say that to this: when you are job searching tell everyone you know about it. See if they can help you get an informational interview.
3. Ask anyone _you don't know_ to be in your network (all they can do is ignore you or say "no." )" No" is not a four letter word...not the last time I checked. Go on Linkedin and go on the chat groups and contact people of common interest. Go to Facebook. Read books on your interest and e-mail the author (Introverts) or call (Extroverts)--although I find that in this electronic world that emailing is successful for anyone. I have done this and I have met authors of books in person while researching a PhD. Program. A friend of mine recently googled a film archiving office because he wanted an internship. He called them and asked them if they would take him as an intern (no listing, they never heard of him) and they asked for a resume and hired him. This happens ALL THE TIME.

These sites are scoured by headhunters and unfortunately, many of the positions are not actual postings. The postings are "plants". If you are conducting a job search, you need to be on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is the best online resource for business networking and job hunting.

Negotiating for a salary is like a game. You make an offer. The employer counters with an offer. This “game” continues until either a consensus or a stalemate is reached. Never go into a bargaining session with the attitude that you must accept the job. The employer will see your desperation and might offer you less than you are worth. You’ll be more confident if you are willing to walk away from an offer. Know when to quit bargaining. Being perceived as greedy, unyielding, demanding or unreasonable may cause the deal to fall apart.

Avoid discussing salary and benefits until the final stages of the process. Salary negotiation is not based on what you are currently making, it is based on what the employer is willing to compensate the incumbent. Before counter offering, get a sense of the full value of the position such as health/retirement benefits, education perks, days off, incentives, etc.
